Keighley & District LHS - Speaker for next Wednesdays meeting......HOPE to see some of you there.................Jan
The talk will be about my investigations into haunted houses and other places in and around Keighley, for the new edition of 'Keighley's Darkest Secrets' - due out in May. Also, new stories of the odd and strange....it has taken two years to write, and has gone through many drafts. The book has had a complete makeover and update, and now includes illustrations, photographs etc, and I will be bringing an MS copy for people to view."

Very much so, but being connected to the Slingsby family gave me a added interest.

Has anyone found out where this devils lake is yet? Did Malcolm say it was between Skipton and Cononley, or is it my hearing that's a bit duff? I can't see anything obvious on Google Earth and would appreciate a nudge in the right direction. If I can find it I thought I might take the pony and trap for a spin...

I found the 'The Walk' Mill's (haunted) house by the way, might have to take a stroll down there sometime although from the looks of the place I could end up being eaten by a huge greasy German Shepherd guarding the place...

I really enjoyed the talk!!! Andy I think I've found the lake using Google maps - look for Ings Lane Cononley and put the Satelite View on (with 'show labels' ticked) at the very end of Ings Lane, look to the left of the brown field and I'm sure you'll see a murky looking long pond maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=ings+lane+cononley&sll=53.928198,-2.012472&sspn=0.011573,0.038581&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Ings+Ln,+Cononley,+North+Yorkshire,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.929058,-2.01421&spn=0.002893,0.009645&t=h&z=17 Try this link above

Well spotted, that's got to be it, and it fits Malcolms description perfectly! It looks a bit like an ox bow lake to me, but I see there's a stream running through the fields which must be what feeds it.
Cheers! ;D

Hey Andy, When I went on Malcolm's tour of Keighley's darkest secrets a few years back (part of the Keighley festival) we went to Walk Mills and there's a little pathway which goes up behind the mill and along to the bottom on Malt Kiln Hill. Anywa there's a space of wasteland behind the mill and the houses and Malcolm said that at dusk the occupants of the houses had reported looking out onto this land and seeing what looked like a man digging and then seemly kicking/moving something into the place where they'd dug...something like a body perhaps??? Malcolm himself said he wondered what they'd find if the land was ever built on!

Ive two 'ghost' stories told to me by my family. My late father was the engineer at Fleece Mills which not only ran the electricity for the mills but also for the shops in Cavendish St.. Because of the Palace cinema's evening shows, he had to work until 10.30pm on his late shift. By the time he had 'shut down' it was after 11pm. and as a 'regular' at the Bolt Makers he could always get a quicky pint or two after closing time. As you most probbly know there was a large dam behind East parade, where a number of suicides had occurred. After a visit to the Boltmakers he started to walk down East Parade towards Parkwood. I don't know if it still there, but there used to a a little alleyway between the shops(I think near Midgleys pie shop) He saw a lady walking in front of him - she was wearing a long dress with a short coat. He saw her turn into the alleyway and hurried to catch her to warn her of the dam. He shouted to her to stop but she carried on walking. When he got to the alley, there was no-one to be seen. He ran back to the Fleece Mill yard opened up the gate to the dam and searched frantically. He then called for assistance from the Bolt, but the lady had completely disappeared! My dad had served many years in the navy and did not scare easily, but it took him quite a while to get over seeing the lady in grey walk and disappear in East Parade. Was she one of the suicides or did he really have one too many in the BoltMakers!!!!!

Evening Parkwood Girl........... Another creepy story.....lovely.......these are just the memories we love. I think the alley way behind the pie shop is gone, as they built a parade of low cost housing behind there....called I believe Cameronian Court........ Bet he was frightened...... My Dad also worked at Fleece Mill before eventually moving up to Grove as one of their drivers.................
