I was recently asked about a nursing home in Keighley, which was called The Montclare Nursing Home, this was in Devonshire Street......information follows
I have been digging into my memory banks in the hopes of providing more clues to MontClare Nursing Home. That is the spelling on my birth certificate so that resolves that part of the puzzle!
I think it was 58 Devonshire St. I remember a huge cellar which was equivalent to a fridge because it was cold and for some reason I have an image of food on plates protected with mesh covers. The home was run my Sister Mabel Collett, formerly a matron at a local hospital. I know the home had male patients because I used to pay one of them a visit and he always had a candy hidden under a bedside bell he used to summon help.
Down the street and on the same side was a church with trees on the property. This stands out because I was with an older boy and we were caught playing with matches!!
This boy might have been David Fitch who had a brother Tony who lived directly across the street.
Thats about all I can remember. Mabel collett moved to Crossgates, Leeds and passed away in the 50s or 60's. I was born at Montclare Nursing Home on May 13 1942. My mother gave an address of 2 Station Grove, Crosshills but I
don't recall much of that address except it was owned by a Mrs Flescher (sp?). We also moved to CrossGates, Leeds in 1947.
I hope you are successful in identifying my birth "house" but I have no idea what significance it has in Keighley history.
