With regard to a recent article in the K N (location of ASDA), the following statement is made And their confusion was compounded because the supermarket’s address — Bingley Street — was only created when the new complex was built and doesn’t show on street maps.Come on Vale , True or False ??

Bingley Street appears on the 1895 map, it runs parallel to Bradford Street and is nearer to the railway line. Right where Asda is now:

I think Derek should contact the Keighley news and correct them and KDLHS should get a mention. That would be a good result.

UP DATE Me to KN To: <alistair.shand@keighley.newsquest.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, November 26, 2009 3:36 PM Subject: ASDA AND BINGLEY STREET Hi Alistair, Being of the generation that took pride in Keighley and it's history, (Keighley and District Local History Society) I was brought up in the Lawkholme area in 1940s/50s I knew that Bingley Street existed well before ASDA was a glint in the eye of the local Council. My father worked for Prince Smiths and Stells and walked passed this street daily for a number of years. As an attender of Eastwood School 1941-1950 it was a short distance from the School and the houses of School friends in the Marlborough Street/Bradford Street area. Seeking further confirmation I placed the question on the Society website. (10.23am Today) The answers and map from 1895 were returned inside 20 mins. Have a look on keighleyhistory.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=881 Many Thanks Regards Derek A. Newiss ******************************************************************** Reply from KN Alistair Shand wrote: Thanks, Derek. Yes, someone else was in touch about it this morning. Maybe I should have said the street had been "recreated" instead of created! Are you happy for your letter to be used on the letters page or is it more just for my own info? Regards Alistair ************************************************* Permission was given to publish the comments in next weeks KN

I am of the generation which takes pride in Keighley and it’s history This is a copy of the first line of the letter printed in the KN You will notice the subtle (PC) change made by the KN, of the tense of the verb take !! The original , as previously posted, was NOT A MISTAKE but has been amended !! Sacre bleu !!

Following this theme. On Sat Dec 5th, in the top shopping centre cafe I met and spoke with a gentleman whom I last spoke with in the early 50s (Could it have been something I said !!??!!) Colin had seen the letter in the KN and said that he used to LIVE in Bingley Street (I acknowledged his hands on knowledge and asked if he had any early post war photographs of the area) he didn't think that it was possible but would check. I'll keep you informed
