I've been reading a book entitled 'The Master Spinner' which I inherited from my late parents. As just about everybody on this Keighley website will know, it's the story of Sir Swire Smith. What intrigues me is the name of the author - Keighley Snowden. Local history stuff doesn't get much more dyed-in-the-wool than a name like that! But apart from this book, I've never heard of this name. Who was Keighley Snowden - can anybody educate me?

Snowden is a name I grew up with and there are/were many different Snowden families in and around Keighley, in Cross Roads and Haworth in particular. Since moving downunder in the early 50s I have lived in Australia and several locations around New Zealand as my job took me. On reflection, I have never come across the name again, so maybe it is a local name. I have not heard the Christian name Keighley though. It sounds like it might be an imaginative nom de plume though? Just thinking out loud! Cheers.

I think the 'Keighley' Christian name could be a result of the common practice hereabouts to use the mothers maiden name as a christian name for the first born son. I've seen several versions of this in my research, such as 'Binns' Wilkinson and 'Heaton' Whitaker. There's certainly a family named Keighley that lived in the Keighley area. In fact I have a man with the surname 'Keighley' in the Great War archive. Here he is and he was living in Braithwaite:

One of my best mates at Nottingham Uni 1965-8 was a Jim Keighley, but he actually lived near Bradford Royal Infirmary, so not quite Keighley. I'm not in touch with him now. I was taught by a Mrs Snowden at Holycroft Infants in my last year there (1954) before moving to Ingrow Juniors.

There was a family, Keighley, who lived in Riddlesden in the 50s, two of which went to Keighley Boys GS.
