Hi everyone, I had a query by e-mail as to the name derivation of Hollins Lane, Hollins Cottage & Hollins House.........Paul Bennett provided me with this information which I am sure will be of interest, especially to Vale, who provided more information on this.
Not much I'm afraid. The first mention appears to be in the 1660 Keighley Parish Registers and is shown more than 100yrs later on the 1771 Greenwood map, where there's a Far Hollins and Near Hollins. I hoped its etymology may have derived from 'holy,' but A.H. Smith tells it merely means 'holly trees'. Hollins Road however, has been conjectured as a Roman road by some writer (think it may have been T.D. Whitaker) and was certainly the old Aire Valley road in bygone times. The old route eventually led to the now-forgotten 'Barrows Field' above Steeton - so named from the now lost remains of prehistoric tomb (I've found a previously unrecorded cup-marked stone nearby). I don't really know too much else. If anything more comes up, I'll let you know.
All the best - Paul
