Riddlesden Hall They are said to have been great buyers, and probably ruined themselves by the stone-and-mortar mania. If we are to regard the voice of tradition, this family, by some equivocal process of law, were forcibly ejected from the place ; and so strong was the popular sympathy of the neighbourhood in their favour, that the river Aire is said to have altered its course out of sullen resentment at the circumstance. There was a chap many years ago (sometime in the 20's or 30's) called Charles Murgatroyd who believed that he was descended from the Murgatroyd family who built East Riddlesden Hall, and he also believed that the Murgatroyd Family should still own it, and he even tried to borrow money to mout a legal challenge as to the ownership. (Charles worked for Samuel Fearnside and Son, Ironfounders and the tale was passed to be via Arthur Fearnside)
