I hadn't heard of him until I saw his full obit in the Daily Telegraph today. Couldn't help wondering if he was related to Prof Herbert Butterfield. He was born at Farnhill , but his first jobs were at Keighley Gasworks , and as a Post Office Clerk before joining Customs and Excise. It would appear he settled near Perth in Scotland, and became a well known conservationist, photographer and writer (books mainly about hills and mountains). He never married. Anyone else know of him ?

Additional info on Google about the books Irvine wrote.

Just googled Fred Robinson Butterfield and there are lots of info on him.
He was a keen cyclist and photographer and his son Irvine donated his works to Bradford Gov and also in Keighley Library. Fred was the first secretary for The Keighley Road Club,he served in the Royal airforce in the far east in WW1 returning to Farnhill in 1946 he died in 1999.
