Does anyone have an old map of central Keighley which shows the old Market Street area? I now know that my grandfather, Wiliam Hampton, lived in /at Naylor's Yard, Market Street when he married my Gran in 1914. He was killed in France 3 years later. I can remember Market Street well enough but I can't remember if Naylor's Yard existed in my time or not. I can remember Brittania Hall and it's location, and I JUST THINK that there was a yard near there. After all these years I can't be sure. Thanks in anticipation. Cheers. Bill

Hi Bill - well as with Jan's map the street map I have doesn't go to quite enough detail to show Naylor's Yard.
However the 1901 census shows an order of Sloe Street, Britannia Square (no's 46-76), Naylors Yard (no's 94-112), and then 8 Market Street. At 8 Market Street was a publican called George Scaife, but I don't know which of the pubs on Market Street that would be.
The Keighley site has a photograph of Britannia Square by the way under 'Old keighley'.
Not sure any of that helps but.....
P.S. The mill shown as 'Market Street Mill' on Jan's map is called 'Globe Iron Works' on mine - but I seem to remember that being the Britannia Snooker Hall at one time - anyone else recall that?

Hi Mike, Thanks for that. I thought the Globe works were more toward Croft Street. I can remember the Britannia Hall quite well but I only ever went upstairs for meetings of the Odsal Speedway Supporters Club, Keighley branch. There may have been snooker tables downstairs. As I recall, the door opened to a flight of stairs and I never saw what was below. That was early 50s. I have enjoyed studying the old street map. When I "were nobbut a lad" we lived in Parkwood for 2 years and we would wander through and scavenge in the ruined houses in the long streets shown- Park, Sun, Green, Wellington etc. They were mainly rubble inside and todays regulations would not allow that. Cheers.
