I have been intrigued for some time, by the beautiful gate at Hawcliffe Corner.................Ian W. has been out during the last week and taken some photographs. It is leaning badly and I for one think it is worthy of saving............BUT there are many questions....................
Can anyone tell me anything about it? Who it belongs/ed to, was there a big house nearby?
I will add a picture to our website, in the hope someone has more information to add to this.

Hi
There was a news item a few years ago concerning the removal of this gateway to a private house & the elderly female owner stated that it was not for sale as it was her property. She lived at Hawcliffe House.

Hi
Hawkcliffe & Hawkcliffe House are on opposite sides of the road - at Hawkcliffe Corner
No discrepancies - just mix up over names - don't we do that regularly

This is from Irene - via the contact page on the website.
Re. gate at Hawkcliffe Corner, this boundary wall formed part of the Cliffe Castle estate, the gate was from Kirkstall Abbey and erected by Henry Isaac Butterfield.
How fantastic......I always thought it was part of the Cliffe Castle Estate which I understood went right up to Steeton.............
Thanks Irene.

Hi Jan, Yes, it'sme, the very same. I retired early last year due to health problems. The issue of the gate is quite worrying, the dressed stone blocks on either side of it keep disappearing and I've a feeling that the gate might be next, there is a market for architectural salvage. I really think that it ought to be moved to a safer place.
Irene
This was from one of my friends - I thought it was - she is also worried about this particular piece of architecture.

Not sure who the gate belongs to now but a few years ago Steeton with Eastburn Parish Council wanted to move the gate to a safer location, unfortunately the owner was not interested. I am at the moment waiting for somone to get back to me with information about the owner. From what I understand the gate is not in situ and was moved to Hawcliffe corner from another location. Will update this information when i get confirmation.

I have now found out more about the gate, and I can also dispel rumours about where it came from www.valendale.myby.co.uk/houses.html#HawkcliffIt is over 2 years since this matter was last talked about, did anyone do anything about saving the gate?
