I have a cousin (sent for adoption) born at Park House, Steeton, in 1943. Does anyone know who ran the maternity home in 1943.
TIA

Hello MArion Welcome to the Keighley Forum. I think I have tried to find this once before for someone else, and we could not find anything. Will keep it in mind and when Keighley Library re-opens (it is undergoing renovation until June I believe) will see what I can find. Is this the same Marion who is on Rootsweb Sheffield list etc......? You know me as Jan in Bronte Country I suspect. We have a mutual interest in I think it was Carbrook School or Salmon Pastures or even Huntsman's Gardens in Sheffield. Take Care

Hi Marion
JUST thought I would have a look around and found this on an adoption board. Hope it helps.
Q. I am trying to find any information on a mother & baby home which my mam was born in. The home has now closed down. It was in a place called Steeton which is in West Yorkshire. We believe the home vas evacuated form Hull during the war, all records seem to have vanished, any information would be welcome. My mam is in her 60s now, and this is something she has been trying to do for a long time. Thank You
A. Park house was a home run by the C of E Diocese (York). It is really difficult tracing down records from homes that have closed down. Try the local authority in which the home came under, if the home closed, records may have been passed on to them.
Also try the GRO, as they may have info from the court. Also, there may be some court records which your mother may be able to view. Does your mum have her adoption order ? this will have the court name (?)which issued the adoption order.
The difficulty is, if your mum was adopted in the early 40s, this was war time, and you can imagine trying to keep records safe from that period. ( sorry if ive assumed your mum was born in the 40s, you say in you post she is in her 60s now my math is not too good )
Your local social services should be helping you, give them a call. Sometimes they will try to fob you off.....dont let them, and pester them all you can, and keep on at them.
I copied it almost word for word Marion, hope it helps.

Hi Jan
Yes I am the same Marion on the Sheffield site. Thanks for all the info, Not living on the main land I nkw find it very frustrating not being able to 'just drive off' to Sheffield or elsewhere to look stuff up. I feel that one day I will track down my long lost cousin, the sooner the better, as we are all getting older!
Thanks again for all the help

Hi again Jan I wrote to the records office at Bradford, who were very helpful, but they do not hold the records for Park House. Having just read the replies on here again, the information from the adobtion board says that Park House was evacuated from Hull, I will give Hull Archives a try next. I have written to NorthAllerton and will be telephoning the C of E Diocese
Regards Marion

I was born at Park House Maternity Home in Steeton in 1943. Does anyone have any information about this York Diocesan maternity home? I believe it was on Pot Lane.
