Does anyone know anything about the Coulton Trophy which was connected with the Keighley Motor Club? My grandfather, Alec Shuttleworth, had a business on North Street (opposite to where the Keighley News offices are). He was a motor dealer in the 1920s and 1930s and founded Tanfield Garage. He later ran a cycle shop until retiring in the late 1940s. I understand he had the first swing-arm petrol pumps in the town.
I have a gold medal dated 1921 presented by the Keighley Motor Club to my grandfather for winning the Coulton Trophy. As far as I can gather it was a motor cycle hill climb and might have been in the Goose Eye area.
I have been amazed down the years how many people have told me they got ther first bicycle from Shuttleworth's shop. His two sisters-in-law, Bessie and Susie (Casson) both had milliners shops, Bessie's being down Cavendish Street and Susie's on North Street by the Town Hall Square.
