I am looking for records about a school which a child from Guard House Drive, Keighley would have gone to in 1936-46. Please can anyone help me. I have other questions to ask about Keighley during that time but would be pleased if someone can help. Thank you

Having spoken with an Uncle who lived on Guard House Road he said that the usual educational route (for non Catholics) was Highfield Infants, Highfield Juniors and Highfield Senior Schools. on Drewry Road.
The Catholic members of the community went to St. Annes on Skipton Road.
To link in with another posting, could I add that on Guard House Drive in the late 1930s and 1940s was the BAKER family. consisting of MUM, DAD, 4 GIRLS (ALICE, EMILY, IVY AND ?) AND 1 BOY WILF.

Hi Jan Thank you for your very helpful info. I am looking for Elsie Baker who lived in Guard House Drive. She was born in 1931so I presume we are looking for 1936 onwards. I really will be grateful for any pictures, or perhaps knows her and can tell me about her, or perhaps what she looked like.
I appreciate your time. Juliette

I was interested to know that you know of Wilfred who lived in Guard House Drive, did you know of an Elsie? She was born in 1931 and lived with Elsie May, her mum, and Wilfred Albert Barber Baker, her dad. She had a brother Jack who died in 1934, and a brother Wilfred who died in 1987. If anyone knows about this I would be grateful for any information. Thanks.

I have had a further conversation and can relate the following My Uncle's recollections are all about Wilf. One day as youngsters they both ran down West Lane (wearing clogs with irons) on their way to the Cosy Corner cinema. Unfortunately as wearers of this comfortable form of footwear will agree, the iron on the sole of one of Wilf's Clogs wore through and in splitting, spread to an angle of 90 degrees and as they continued running, the jagged edge of the iron cut through Wilf's trousers and socks and created a deep wound on his calf muscle, so much so that it necessitated a visit to St. John's Hospital for running repairs At the age of 14/15 and despite enjoying playing football Wilf took up boxing and trained in a room behind the Grapes Inn. Like my Uncle, Wilf served his time and became a Painter and Decorator. Another recollection was of visiting a sanatorium in the Grassington District together with Wilf's sister Ivy when Wilf was a patient there suffering from TB in 1952.
More later as further memories are discovered.

Would he not have visited the Keighley Victoria Hospital? always thought St Johns was only maternity and elderly long stay? Talking about which school, I was a member of the first group of pupils to go all the way through Our Lady of Victories starting there in January 1960 on the first day it opened.

Hi Alumpot, Please don't shoot the messenger !!
Unlike some reporters, I asked the same question and simply expressed the information I received.

Message for alumpot
Having asked my uncle to review his memory !! He confirmed to me today and said that he must have had a "senior" moment and infact it was to Victoria Hospital that Wilf was taken. Sorry for the misinformation.
He has an early school photograph which includes Wilf. Given that I should have this shortly I'll forward it to Jan for inclusion on the site.

I have been speaking to a lady who used to live opposite the Bakers on Guardhouse Drive, and according to Mary, thinks Elsie is still alive, and on one side of the Bakers were the Jacksons and on the other was Whitehead Mr. Whitehead is still alive and lives up Fell Lane, though not in good health I'm afraid. Wilf and Elsie apparently had a sibling who emigrated to Canada and Wilf was going to join them, but unfortunately contracted TB which prevented him from going.

Eric, more information on the Bakers please. Does "Mary" know where Elsie lives, and is Wilf Elsie's brother? Wilf died in 1987 so when was it that he was going to Canada? Do you know the date that the sibling when to Canada, and is it possible that Elsie went with her. I presume the sibling was one of her 3 sisters? Sorry about all the questions but I am desperate to catch up with her and her family if there are any left.
Danewiss, I'd love a photo of Wilf please.....
Thanks to both, Jules

Eric, could you ask your friend Mary whether Elsie ever married? I would be so pleased to know if so, and what her married name is? Thanks. Jules
