1861 & 1871 censuses list various of my Driver ancestors at Smithy Houses, Morton - they are numbered 1-8 & listed between Dunkirk & Kiln Bank. I can find Dunkirk Rise on current maps but not Kiln Bank or Smithy Houses & wonder if anyone can help me locate them? In 1881, the dwellings are listed as 1-7 Smithy, Morton Various members of the Driver family were blacksmiths going back to 1700s - so just where was this Smithy? Any info would be much appreciated thanks Jill

Hi Jill
Kiln Bank and Dunkirk are also both areas of Riddlesden, did not realise Morton had similar named places.................we live and learn.
WIll have a look on my old maps for you.

Yes this part of (West) Morton & Morton Banks are now part of Riddlesden - not sure when (many years ago) or why that happened, presumably to do with administrative boundaries - keeps us all on our toes! Jill

Found it!! 'The Smithy' appears on a couple of maps of Morton Banks, Riddlesden on old-maps.co.uk including 1895 - YORKSHIRE 1:10,560 & is between Dunkirk Wood, Bank House and Kiln Bank as indicated on census returns (surprise, surprise!) Does anyone know if Keighley library has this map or similar & is it possible to photocopy sections? Jill

Aren't Smithy cottages still on Banks Lane close to the Kiln Bank/Slade Lane turn off?

We must share the same ancestors as my g-g-grandfather lived at Smithy Houses. He was Fred Driver b c 1854.
I am very confused with all the Drivers in my family tree as it looks like my g-grandmother annie Driver married a cousin called Thomas Driver.
Do any of these names mean anything to you?
