I have been trying to track down a relative of mine, Richard Ashworth Hoyle, of Bacup, Lancashire. Now, in the 1861 census there is a Richard A Hoyle of the appropriate age and origin, listed as being a pupil at Bank House, then under the direction of a Mr. Wm. Jackson and his wife. There was a governess there, four servants, and apparently a French master. The location is given as Morton. I did find a Bank House on an 185something map, but it appears to be in a rather lonely place just south of Thwaites - this does not appear to agree with the census form, which on the same page mentions Dunkirk House or Road - not Rise; alas, I don't have the census form in front of me.
I am sure it is too much to hope that something might have survived from this institution over all these years, but any information at all about Bank House would be most profoundly appreciated.
Regards,
Charles Rignall

I don't know anything about that school, but I do know that at the top of Banks Lane in Riddlesden as you head out of the village there is a house called Bank House next to a house called Dunkirk.
Much of what we know as Riddlesden used to be referred to as Morton Banks, (hence Banks Lane I guess), so that could at least be the building you are looking for?

Hello - I have just moved into a house which was specifically built for Richard Ashworth Hoyle in Bacup. I think there is a bit of confusion as there seems to be two Richard A Hoyles in the area at about the same time. This one is part of the Hoyle mill owners family - Isaac Hoyle being the most famous.
I am fascinated by the history - although not a Hoyle myself and would like to know if this is the same person you are looking to trace.
