I have a friend that lives in a big house called The Elms near Damems Station and she can't find any history on it, can anyone help? She thinks it was originally called Pepper Hill House and that a mill owner and his family lived there. We would be very grateful for any info, however small, on the house and its owners, Thanks.

Hi Pat
A friend of mine bought and is renovating Damems Mill, perhaps he can help..........will send you his e-mail later or we can take a ride up there one afternoon.
It is a wonderful site.................
The Mill, in front of it the River Worth and in front of that the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

I can't directly answer your question Pat - but there is a modern development of houses on Damems Lane called 'Pepper Hill Lea' so there must be some local connection there.

Haggas's lived there in 1851 - as Pepper Hill House Damems, with an Ann Smith & (here we go again) Joseph Town. Later on 25th Aug 1886 a William James Edward Shaw aged 22 died there and was buried on 27th in Utley. Later at The Elms, Damems John Wright died on 3rd April 1896- he was buried at St John's on the 7th aged 58. looks like a 10 year gap in which it was renamed? M

Thanks for the info, thats a brilliant help. My friend says there have been a few ghostly happenings in the house, noises and pictures being turned around!, so maybe its something to do with the people that died there. Any more info will be gratefully received, thanks

Hello Pat, Send me either your email address or that of your friend, and I'll tell you about the the people who lived at the Elms, and the history of the whole family - including a photo of the owner at the begining of the 20th century. If your friend prefers, I'm willing to call and visit her.
