Hello Everyone I have a question about a photo in a book - "Golden Years of Keighley" - page 76 (also on cover)- this was taken in 1932. Is there a record of the people in this pic (I think one of them may be my father!) On my brother's birth certificate in 1932 my father William McDonnell's occupation was "Motor Bus Driver" & according to my sister he drove buses for quite a few years. Question...Are there any records of these Bus Drivers in Keighley? Many Thanks Christine

My (maternal) grandfather Arthur Clayton, was also driving buses at about that time as well as a spell on the Bradford 'trolley buses'. I don't think I have any archives on this though.

Hi Christine. I also have that book and I remember discussing that same photo a few years ago with an old mate who still lives in Keighley, and he told me that his dad was standing on the steps of one of the buses. I can ask Jan to ring him to ask if he has any names- it's a long shot BUT-he just might have a few names. Cheers. Bill.

Hello Bill & Brian? (fsharpminor ?)
Thanks for your replies!
I think my Dad could be the 3rd down on the steps of the bus on the right!!!
But it is probably "a long shot" Bill ! But I thought there might have been some records of the employees of the Bus Company.
Bye from Christine
Christine

Hello Christine, Yes I live downunder in Auckland,NZ after emigrating toAustralia in the 50s. We have visitors from Keighley with us right now, hence my delay in responding. Sydney is a favourite city of mine and we get there occasionally these days, but mainly we head for Geelong in Victoria where I have many friends from my growing up days. I have lots of books and memorabilia from Keighley about the house. You can't change your roots but you can change the direction you go in life!. Cheers, Bill.

Hello Bill Nice to hear from you in New Zealand! I haven’t been there but have been told it is beautiful! You must have grown up in Keighley, whereas I only spent the first few years of my life there! I was born in 7 Granville St (on my birth cert) but my sister insists it was 7 Argyle St – I have a theory that these were “back to back” houses & actually the same house! I have childhood memories.I remember “Plot night” in Argle St We moved to a shop 42 Belgrave Rd opposite the hospital which my Mum ran while Dad was away in WW2. & I remember the day he came back from the war! I remember starting school at St Anne’s & I even remember going to a funeral. I was so thrilled when Malcolm found all my grandparents & great grandparents buried in Utley Cemetery. We also came out to Oz in 1955 & my parents never went back! When my mother died in 1995 aged 93 I had the sudden urge to find out about my ancestors as I realized I knew very little. I have had 3 whistle-stop visits to Keighley since 1955. In 1961…1996 with my daughter…& 2003 with my husband. But my family history is all in Keighley..so I have obviously found my roots. I love reading the Q & A on the forum . Enjoy spending time with your visitors from Keighley. Kind Regards Christine

Christine,
I lived on Mornington Street from approx 1970 to getting married. Mum's parents had lived in the same house all their life.
Which school did you go to, we are looking for stories and pictures of Highfield School for a proposed book, it will be a best-seller...........................
I am trying to work out, if you had a shop on Belgrave road, it would not have faced directly onto the hospital, but their was a couple of shops on Drewry Road which was opposite the hospital, or am I totally wrong..............................
Lovely to have you and Bill so interested in your "Home Town" I met Bill a couple of years ago, smashing bloke, hoping to meet again when he come to Keighley later this year.
Cheers Bill & Christine.
