Can anyone remember the bomb shelters that ran along one side of Victoria Park. They were near to where the sports were held before the Gala and a Marvelous Band Stand was also nearby.

Yes I do vaguely remember some stone huts or something, and certainly the band stand, and I think there was also a loo block in the same area. My (paternal) grandparents lived just over the wall in Swallow Street.

I seem to recall (now that's an admission of age) the air raid shelters were at the "top" of Vic Park - at the opposite end from Hard Ings Lane. Entering the park from the gate at the junction of Bfd Rd and Parson street, within 100 yards the tarmac path forked. Between these 2 paths there was a raised level of land and it was here that the shelters were - roughly opposite Bronte Street and the top of The Beeches , then a private house. The difference in levels can be seen on Google Earth. This was a favoured site for watching the evening Gala attractions and the fireworks. I recall the sloping entrances to the shelters which were surrounded by heavy wooden fencing to prevent accidents. They were closed off and had an unattractive smell - for people. They seem to have had a strange attraction for the local kids.
