"What's in a name?" or "Wheer t' ell did they get that name from?" basically the origins of Street and Place names. for example:
Pickles Hill at Oakworth. Apparently was named or called after Nathaniel Pighills, who built Laverock hall in the mid 1660's, giving the name "Pighills Hill". It doesn't take much imagination to change Pighills to Pickles Hill. (another name for it was "Turner Clough)
Two Laws (on the road over the top to Laneshaw Bridge) I was originally told that it reffered to the proximity of the Yorkshire /Lancashire border, where miscreants from one county could take advantage of the "Two Laws" and hop over the border to the safety of the next county.
Though according to info in the library, a "law" is a small hill, of which there are two one either side of the road, just past Water Sheddles res. though i must say I've looked and can't say that I can actually notice them!)
Eric sent me this in the hope we can start more queries on the site.
What else can you add.
Start a new discussion using the title of the thread you are starting...then we can all immediately see it.
Thanks everyone

There's a small town in County Durham - Tow Law - probably of the same origin as Two Laws. It was noted for its then amateur football team which occasionally made it into the FA Cup draw with the professional teams.

There are quite a few people with the surname Pighills, living in Oxenhope. I've met one chap who said that a number of his family called themselves Pickles instead and had done for years. I used to live at Pickles Hill so I had a genuine interest in this bit of information. Never kept pigs though... ;D
