Hi Jan - Just thought you might be interested who's funeral the receipt was for on 27th April 1893. Hainworth Share/Shay/Shaw to Cemetery etc.
It was for Sarah Midgley who died on 22nd April 1893 and was buried in Utley Cemetery on 27th April 1893 - aged 50, a spinster and she had died 34 days after Martha Midgley from Newsholme who is in the same grave.
There are 9 Midgley's in the same grave.
I am sure I can supply details of all the others if there is anyone looking for that info.
Malcolm ;D Regards Malcolm

I wonder if they are ancestors of Edwin Midgley who was the school dentist in 50's and 60's ! His son Richard (whom I sat by at school) is still around having recently posted on www.kbgs.com. forum

Hi
I don't know if they were related to Edwin or Richard, but I am curious about Mrs Sneed, who received the bill.
Was she a relative, executor, or member of staff for the funeral director?
Looking at the evidence of funerals at the time the sequence of events was:-
The Hearse and cab went to Hainworth Shay, and (I speculate) that it descended down the cobbled road to Halifax Road, along South Street, Bridge Street, North Street, Skipton Road, into Utley Cemetery.
The alternative would have been down Hog Holes Lane, Park Lane, Coney Lane, Cavendish Street, North Street, Skipton Road into the cemetery.
The service was at the Consecrated Chapel (now demolished) as Sarah was buried in Consecrated ground.
Then the 'bogey' (still exists) was used to take the coffin to the graveside behind the current Cemetery office.
The Hearse was returned to the stables and the cab was used to take the chief mourner/s back to Hainworth Share/Shaw.
All this from a little receipt.
