Hello Jan
My sister and I are tracing our family tree and we have discovered that Keighley is a key town/area for our family in and around the 1800's.
We have traced our GGG Grandfather, his name is William Burrell and he was married to Sarah Burrell. He died in 1841 from 'Decline' aged 40 in Water Lane, Keighley. In attendance was Richard Fowler, a Shoemaker from nearby Low Street. William was a mechanic at a mill (which one is unknown....'Low Street Mill' or 'Low Mill' possibly?).
We are now ready to take our investigations to the next level and are planning a trip to Keighley, but before we do, we would like to do a little bit more research. We would be so very grateful if you could help with the following questions....
* Was there a workhouse or hospital in Water Lane around 1841, or was this an area with houses, i.e. where he may have lived?
* What was 'Decline' and did many people die from of? Would it mean his family had to move away?
* Do you know if there is a list of mills in Keighley at that time...I have found the two above which are local to the area where he died? Are there any sources of mill records...workers, etc?
* We know Sarah was born in Keighley and as William was approx 23 when his first child was born, we are assuming he came from Keighley as well....what were the parishes in and around Keighley at that time...do you know if their records are still available (William nor his family appear on the 1841 census)?
* I have read on your websites about mechanics from Glasgow...did many men come from Glasgow at this time?
*Based on the info we have given have you any ideas on websites, areas of the town we could visit/contact?
Sorry to burden you with so many questions, but we are desperately looking for leads!
Many Thanks
Anthony & Suzanne Burrell
