On Dec 5 a meeting was held with Bradford Council at Keighley Library. The outcome of the meeting was that the library will ave to close in order to undertake the necessary work. This will obviously make research more difficult, as archives will inevitably have to be moved to another library. AT present the library is to close mid January and remain closed until June 2007. This appears to be a necessary evil and should result in Keighley having one of the best libraries in the region. Bradford Council promised to renovate the library to a standard that will make us and the whole region proud of it. We have been informed that the public will be kept informed at various stages, in order to avoid the problems that have ocurred over the last year. We have also been told that members of the public will be asked to have a look at work as it gets to a half way stage. The library closure will mean that Keighley & District Local History Society will be holding monthly speaker meetings at another venue. We are sourcing this as a priority and will let you know as soon as possible - we will keep all members informed. Keighley History can be found at www.simplesite.com/Keighleyhistory Keighley Family History can be found at www.Keighleyfamilyhistory.org.uk/

Hi Jan - managed to log on - don't know what i was doing wrong!!
The library has been missed, didn't realise how much until it wasn't there!!! Can't wait to see the family history section!!
Hi all - new to site, hubby found it for me as I'm yet another family history researcher, however having lived just outside Keighley for 30 years I'm also very interested in the town's history. Ian Dewhirst is my guru, tho' he doesn't know it!!!
The photo links are great, and I've enjoyed reading all the posts on the forum.
Thank you
Judith

I enabled your access yesterday. Sorry for the delay. All new members have to be confirmed by a moderator because I altered the registration process to try and stop the spammers from just registering and putting spam on the forum. It means that people may have to wait a short while until one of us spots a valid new member and lets them in. The forum is of course open for 'viewing' to anyone but now only registered members may add posts or replies. Hopefully this will cure the spam problem we've been having. I'm just helping Jan out with this...

Hi Jan-I look forward to your impressions with great interest. I see on the Keighley web impressions which are not favourable AS A LIBRARY. More of a fun place for children and a shortage of books which will upset the traditionalist.

Hi Bill
The library downstairs is now all open plan. As far as I can see, there is a LARGE children's area on the ground of the library, BUT we have to bear in mind that certainly when I was a child the children had their own library next door. The reading room has been modernised with tables and chairs for reading the papers and magazines. There is a drinks machine in this area and also a lift for the use of the less able.
At the opening, we were advised that there are still many books to put out, some of the shelves were fairly sparse, so I suspect these will be filled over the next few weeks.
BUT in all fairness the Local Studies and Reference section upstairs has many more items out front now than there were before. There are more computers for Family/Local HIstory and studies. It is nicely laid out and brightly lit which is a must when reading some of the old papers.
Yesterday could probably be discounted as it was the opening and as such attracted a lot of attention, which should settle down over the next few weeks.
Let's see what happens over the next week or so.....then we can make an informed assessment.
