Further description:
'The Oxford Hall in Oakworth Road is devoted to Vaudeville. The building is large, and having been specially constructed for the purpose is on the most approved lines for comfort and convenience. The "turns" given here show much care in their selection, and the hall enjoys a large measure of popularity.
The advent of animated photography and its recent great developments have led to keen enterprise in this class of entertainment, and locally the cinemas get a large share of the public patronage'.
Of course my childhood memories are of grandma's trips to the Oxford Hall bingo club.......

Im told this was the first 'pictures' I was ever taken to by my parents, must have been about 1951, to see 'The Wizard of Oz'. It was the nearest one to where we lived in Malsis Road. It was also the first one I went to without parents, but with my friend Jim Hall (parents had newsagents on Victoria Rd near top of Goulbourne Street). Must have been about 1956. Film was 'Hurricane Smith'. Jim was in trouble when we got home because he lost his cap! Its surprising what you can remember sometimes !
Oh, and my late mother was born (as Sally Clayton) in 1922 in the middle one of the three cottages next door.

Hey you Guys, It's fifty years ago today that the Oxford Hall closed as a cinema, and nobody seems to have noticed! It opened on 20 March 1911.
