On moving to a cottage in Herefordshire in 1963, my Grandmother, Edith May Goldrick, (nee Croad, born Keighley 1/5/1896), began keeping a diary and this is now a fascinating record of day to day village life. Within it there are also occassional references to her childhood and I would now like to try and elaborate on some of these.
Her father, James Croad (born 29/2/1854), was a blacksmith by the old Taylor's Brewery in Cook Lane. It strikes me that this location may have been photographed. Does anybody know of a picture?
Sadly the enterprise did not fare well due, it is said, to the canals closing and horses no longer being required. The business went bankrupt and they apparently managed to spirit their furniture away in the middle of the night using a rubber wheeled cart and rubbers over the horses hooves. I have no date for this but I guess about 1902. Verification of this is probably difficult.
"A childhood pleasure were Sunday morning walks to Bingley Locks to a quaint little pub with tressle tables and swings for children to play on in a very unkempt garden while their elders went inside to partake of a glass of beer. Dad would bring us a mug of home made lemonade or a glass of nettle beer with a packet of biscuits. Then there was the thrill of riding back to Keighley on the horse tram. "
Is the horse tram recollection correct? This must be very late in the day for horse trams.
Thank you,
John Goldrick

Hi John the trial run of the new electric tramways car no.1,was 16 September 1904, so your dates may well be correct. re the moving out in the middle of the night. I believe this was fairly common in those days, and where the expression "moonlight flit" originated, and where the term "flitting vans" for furniture removal vans was coined. Cheers.
