Hello Keighley historians. Just to let you know that there will be a talk and exhibition at Keighley Library Local Studies on Saturday 28th October 2017 at 2pm to mark 80 years since 4,000 Basque children came to this country as refugees from the Spanish Civil War. The story of this episode is largely forgotten as is the fact that Keighley was home to one of the largest groups of children. Local people raised funds, gave practical help and welcomed the children into their homes. Some of the friendships formed lasted for many years. Simon Martinez, the son of one of the Basque children, will outline the background to the evacuation of the children from Spain and talk about their experiences in this country. I will draw on my ongoing research into the story of the Keighley Basque Colony which my grandfather played a significant role in setting up and running and I will talk about the recollections of some of the people involved. Hope this free event will be of interest to some of you! John Birkbeck
