Hi
I'm new to the forum and writing on behalf of my dad Samuel Binns. My dad is 81 years old and for as long as I can remember he has wanted to know what happened to his parents. Is there anyone out there who can help me in my quest as I feel that time is now running out? I just want to help him find closure - maybe he has relatives still living in Keighley!
He was born in 1933 and lived on the corner of Fell Lane with his parents, Samuel and Edith (married in 1932) and his three younger sisters, Muriel, Cynthia and Joyce. When he was about 8 years old, my dad remembers someone coming to the house and telling them to get into a big black car parked outside, he had no idea where he was going - Joyce was only a few months old. As he walked up the path he looked back and saw his mum standing at the door with her head in her hands. I have had this image of his poor mum in my head for many years - nothing can be worse than losing your children!
I know times were hard and dad remembers going without food. He doesn't remember his dad being there very often, however we have since found out that he was possibly in the Navy and later died at sea during WW2 in 1942 - Genes Reunited. My dad and his sisters were separated and placed in different homes. When he first arrived at the home he thought he was on holiday because they fed him so well! He didn't see two of his sisters until 30 years later, we had a big reunion in Blackpool with my Aunty Cynthia and her family! His sisters were adopted and my dad was fostered. His dad came to see him about a year later in Batley where he lived with his foster parents. He remembers him wearing a uniform - he's not sure if it was army or Navy. He told him he would come back to see him again, but he never returned - we think he later died at sea. My Aunty Muriel's sister by adoption, remembers his dad coming to their house to tell them his wife had gone into a mental hospital and he had return to the Navy - She also remembers him wearing a uniform.
With the help of my wonderful friend who is a bit of a history buff, we have managed to piece together some information.
His dad was born in 1904 in the workhouse to Samuel and Annie Binns - His siblings were Elsie, Edith and Albert. His mum was born 1911 - maiden name of Oates, she had a twin sister Norah. They were born at 167 Hebden Road Haworth to Thomas Pullen (originally from Wiltshire) and Amelia Oates (originally from Sheffield). The 1911 Census states they were both married to someone else at the time, which would not have gone down too well in 1911 - there was a lot of scrubbing out on the census! Amelia was married to a Herbert Oates. The Census also states the twins were illegitimate and were named Oates not Pullen. Sadly Amelia died three years later of pneumonia, leaving the three year old twins with Thomas Pullen. I don't know what happened to her sister Norah or to Thomas Pullen (my Great Grandad).
My biggest question is - what happened to his mum Edith? I can't find a record of her death as Edith Binns. My dad has always presumed she never recovered and died in the mental hospital, possibly Highroyds. I think she may have got her life back together, remarried and died with a different surname. My dad says, then why did she not look for her children? I just don't know - It's such a sad story.
Any information, however small would be appreciated. My dad is the only one left now, his sisters died a few years ago.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
