Has anyone any information about Major C.P.Cass, please? Was he a local worthy? I assume the Major was the military rank from WW1? I have a reference to him in 1924 making a presentation at the Cavendish Hotel and wondered what position he might have held to have been invited as a guest. In the report he was referred to as a Keighley man, whether that meant a 'local, born and bred' or someone who had been a resident for some time, I don't know. Thanks for any help.

Charles Parkinson Cass a native of Thirsk but long time resident & solicitor in Keighley. He was a territorial officer but did see active service in France during WW!. He was very heavily involved in sporting life in Keighley so much so he must have had difficulty in finding time to work. He died 5th July 1949, an obituary appeared in the Keighley News 9th July 1949.

Thanks, that is interesting ... any references to a connection with the Keighley Walking Club? Failing that, any connections with the Yorkshire Walking Club, the Keighley Harriers or any of its reincarnations - Keighley and District Harriers - Keighley Parish Church Harriers - or any other running or walking activity in Keighley. I used to visit a former Keighley Harrier on my visits to Keighley, some times I met his brother (cousin?) and Cass's name never came up when we were talking about running as far as I can recall, hence my original enquiry. Do you know if he was a benefactor in any way to any sport's club? Next time I am in Keighley I will look at the obit.

I have an Ancestry Subscription. He was born 1878 in Thirsk, died Worth Valley 1949. I cannot find a marriage for him. Keighley Phone Book 1910 has him working as a Solicitor in Devonshire St. In 1927 Kellys directory at 157 North Street. I have found his medal roll index for WW1 (The usual 1915 Star, Victory Medal and Campaign medal). West Riding Regiment officer. These were sent to Central Chambers Keighley. Cannot find his enlistment papers though (you can for many recruits)

C. P. Cass is on the roll of honour for Keighley Golf Club. Which figures, since most of them were officers. I also have this picture for a Mrs Cass, from the Keighley News, dated October 14th, 1916:

I have just come across the following from the Yorkshire Evening Post 10th August 1912 Swimmers in Keighley have long felt the want of adequate provision in the way of swimming baths. and steps have been taken to construct a swimming bath more in keeping with the size of the town. The present baths only measures 18 yards by 6 yards with no more than 12 dressing rooms. The new baths on then other hand is intended to be 33 yards long and 10 yards wide and it will have 82 dressing boxes. It will be equipped with a self filtration plant, a system which is being widely adopted. The Keighley Swimming Club whose membership is 250, has a most popular president in Major C.P.Cass. During his six years' presidency he has done a great deal to improve the state of affairs. Although a busy man as a solicitor and member of the Town Council, he has found time to take part in many branches of athletics. For ten years he has been president of the Keighley F.C. an d besides being a member of the Yorkshire Hundred Cross Country Association, is a representative vice-president of the Yorkshire Amateur Gymnastic Association and a vice-president of the Yorkshire Rifle Association. He is a major in the 6th West Riding Regiment and is joint secretary of the Territorial Team Association. He was elected this year on the executive of the Yorkshire Amateur Swimming Association. There is a photograph of him which I have so far failed to attach!! Attachments:cass.docx (618.03 KB)

I have just come across the following from the Yorkshire Evening Post 10th August 1912 (snipped for brevity) There is a photograph of him which I have so far failed to attach!! If you would like to email it to me on andy@menofworth.org.uk I'll put it on for you, plus I'd like to investigate this man further and create a biography for him, so I'll check the resources we have with the Men of Worth Project.

Josie, do you happen to know if Godfrey Jacques Sellers was son or grandson of Arthur Sellers and Mary Arabella Jacques? If so that would add to my family tree.
Thanks
John-Christian
