Public Lecture by Lucille Campey

Writing from Nova Scotia in 1774 to his cousin in the East Riding, Luke Harrison
was expressing his longing to be back home with his friends and family. The
lecture will give details of the 900 or so mainly Yorkshire people, of whom Luke
was one, who emigrated to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick during the 1770s. It
will also trace the progress of later Yorkshire settlers to the rest of Canada.
Yorkshire people were very well represented in the early tide of emigration to
come to Quebec and Ontario and later to the Prairie Provinces. In fact, by the
mid 19th century Canada had Yorkshire blood flowing through its veins! And yet,
despite their great numbers, little attention has been paid to their colonizing
achievements. This lecture will attempt to correct this omission...
