Hi, I'm looking for anybody that can give me infomormation or give me a suggestion on where to start looking for Branchen Bank Hostel, Ingrow, Keighley. My Grandmother was registered as being a resident there in 1949, but I can't find any information on the internet.
I live in Wales so its not easy as I have to do everything over the internet.
Any information or a point in the right direction would be most welcome.
Many thanks Kym

It would be Bracken Bank, not Branchen Bank. I think there was a hostel of some sort though at nearby Oakbank. It was originally a mill owners house, but think it was at one time used by social services. Now its part of the new school on the site which opened in 1964. Think there might be something on this forum if I can find it.

Further to above, I found this:-
'In the same year (1947) a residential hostel opened for maladjusted boys, several of whom attended Ingrow School. This was in Oakbank House (it was commandeered by the army in the war). The Haggas family had moved out to their house in Scotland, and rather return to a property which would have needed a great deal of restoration, they sold it , with nearby Bracken Bank House to the council for £15k the pair.'
So looks like Oakbank was for boys. But a Bracken Bank House is also mentioned, maybe that was for girls. Someone on here will know I am sure.

Hi fsharpminor, thank you so much for your help, at least it means I can now check with the correct spelling. The school part is a bit weird as my Grandmother was married in 1949 and this address was written on the marriage certificate as her place of residence. The part about the army commandeering it during the war would make a bit more sense as she came over after the war being released from a prisoner of war camp in Europe.

Just after the war a lot of the mills opened hostels to house workers, who were often refugees. Did your Grandmother work at Haggas's Mill?

Hi Joycen, I don't think so. There is no occupation on her marriage certificate. I am planning on visiting Keighley either next month or April, if anybody could point me int he direction of where information on this hostel might be held that would be most helpful. Many thanks for everyones help.

Well the Oakbank hostel still forms part of Oakbank School, about a good mile south west out of the centre of Keighley on the B6143 road which leads to Oakworth. It became part of the school on its opening at Easter 1964, I had two terms there leaving at Christmas. I am not sure exactly where Bracken Bank House was but it wouldn't be too far away from Oakbank.
