Does anyone remember Layc ocks, a tannery down in the centre of town. What a smell ! My grandfather worked there and as a small boy when Shopping with Mum, I remember being taken to the door to see if we can spot him. On the same subject of tanneries, the Flappit pub on the way to Cullingworth/ Denholme was originally called that because in the field opposite was a stream and a 'flaypit' where hides used to be flayed before being taken to the tannery. Was there also a tannery in that area?

The tannery at Flappit Springs was before my time(40's and 50's) but there was another on Hebden Road, between Brow Top and Oxenhope,on the left hand side going to "Oxnap"which was still going when I left the area in 1954.Cheers.

The only tannery I remember passing frequently was the Beta Tannery on Halifax Road. From memory, which after 40 years out of town is fuzzy, it was down from Bocking near the bend in the road at Hermit Hole.

There was a Tan Yard behind the flats on Oakworth Rd, just above Exley Road. Take the road downbehind the flats. This business was owned by the PICKARD family from 1840 to the beginning of this century., it seems likely that the tanyard was already in operation at the end of the 18th century under Joseph ANDERTON. Thomas & James PICKARD appear to have been running the yard in the 1840's and Robert & John took charge in the 1860's, they were James PICKARD's eldest sons. By the end of the century John had handed over the business to his son Brook. The departure of Brook PICKARD at the beginning of the century marked an end of the working life on the Exley Head Tan Yard.
Further information available from Jan - details are from the book "The Oakbank History Trail" some inaccuracies do exist in this book, but nevertheless it is a fascinating read.
A Countryside Publication ISBN 0 86157 048 0 - now out of print but not impossible to find.
Hope this is of interest to some of you.

My father (still in Keighley aged 86) tells me here was a tannery up on t'Cringles between Silsden and Addingham . Only the chimney is left sticking straight out of the field near the reservoir.

I always wondered what that little chimney was...seemed strange in the field, on it's own..............thanks for that.

There is a tannery on my old map of Keighley where Bow Street crossed Queen Street (so where the Airedale Centre stands now). Is that the one you mean?

Hi All AM I correct in thinking the Hippodrome was called The Queens BEFORE it was called The Hippodrome...........? It sure was Jan.See Ian Dewhirst's "History of Keighley". It was rebuilt in brick and stone in 1889 after a wooden building was tried in 1880. Queens Theatre and Opera House. Demolished in 1961. This was a lovely old theatre- a real shame it couldn't be saved/restored. Cheers.
