Hi Everyone, my apologies for the short notice but this has been dropped on us rather suddenly. If anyone has some spare time tomorrow morning (Saturday 16th March) to help save a bit of Keighley's history, then you'll be welcome to give us a hand moving the Town Hall archive from the cellars to storage rooms in Russell Street. We're meeting up at 9.00 am at the rear entrance to the Town Hall (on the Town Hall Square side) to get started shifting it and we hope that if we can get enough help, we can sort it in the day, or even the morning. We have transport sorted out but need people to move books and boxes or archive material to and from the van at either end. It doesn't matter if you can't stay more than an hour or two and we'll be very grateful for any time you can spare. If we don't move it all now, then it's going to end up at Bradford in storage where it probably won't see the light of day, especially as Bradford Library (and archive room) is closed altogether whilst they muck about deciding whether or not to spend any money doing it up. We need to keep Keighley's History in Keighley! If anyone comes down to the Town Hall during the day tomorrow and can't find anyone about, please ring me on 07792 665336. Cheers, Andy. www.keighleynews.co.uk/news/10293149.Keighley_local_historians__plea_for_volunteers/

The archive is to be saved and will be placed in Keighley Library. After we had been told by Bradford Council staff that we needed to remove it all quickly because the space was needed to other things, we arranged to try to remove the archive material (over 1000 ledgers and files) for safe keeping to some storage rooms in Russell Street. We had also informed the library staff about it the moment we knew what was in the Town Hall cellars. Apparently it eventually filtered through to the powers that be, and we were asked not to proceed and that the archive would be dealt with by library staff. This misunderstanding has now been resolved and the archive will have a permanent home in Keighley Library. Thank you to all those who volunteered to come and help move the archive for us.

Ha! Not all my work I'm afraid. It's been mostly the efforts of our Vice Chair Joyce Newton and a couple of others who were involved in this one. I went along for the ride. Dan Moorhouse has posted a picture of the archive in-situ in the Town Hall cellar on our website front page. I'll see about getting some more posted online for people to view. Here's the only one posted so far:

Interestingly I dare say that some of those ledgers will be covering the old Haworth Urban District Council and could not be found when a point was being made just at the transition from Keighley Council to Bradford.
The new road being built along Rawdon Road, Haworth, had long since been planned on land bought from the farm (Haworth Park being built on that land too)that was at the top of Butt lane. Alas the lack of 'evidence' from the HUDC files meant that the houses near by had to contribute to the cost of the road.

Quite possibly. There were certainly items from Oakworth UDC, so it's not too much to expect there to be Haworth UDC items in there as well. There were certainly Oxenhope, Haworth and Stanbury Poor Rate books from the early 1900's that I saw, so there may be a lot more similarly related items about to surface in the next few months. I was in Keighley Library a couple of days ago and met Sue Caton from Library Services who is dealing with it all and she very kindly showed me the rooms that the archive will be held in. They're going to lose their work room and it looks like it will be a bit of a squeeze but she was sure that they'll be able to get it all in.

Morning All
I' just enrolled to see whether anyone locally in Keighley may be able to assist with a long shot attempt to find records from the 50's. I'm trying to trace records that may have been kept of the Italian migrant workers who arrived here during the early to mid-50's who went onto be placed in mills etc.. to work. Can anyone suggest where/how I may start ??

Don't know much about the Italian immigrants. However during my childhood I lived up Glen Lee Lane(T'Hog Hoyles to locals)which overlooks the Woodhouse estate. This estate was always referred to at the time as "The Isle Of Capri", as allegedly it was in this area that the Italians had settled.

Hi paulfromleeds Many of the older Italian community got together to do a book about their experiences , about 10 year ago, and the library should have one. If they don't let me know as I did have a copy. When they came over to work in the mills a lot lived in hostels run by a the mill that they worked in, Is it something or someone specific that you are looking for or just general?
