I wonder if any memories are stirred by this photo of residents of Hainworth Lane / Ebenezar Square in 1953? Chickens were reared by Mr Slater (right) for the Coronation feast in the Wesley Place Methodist Chapel. My dad is 3rd left. Other (I think) are left Mr Thatcher (Halifax Rd), ?Mr Greewood who had the shop at the bottom of the lane?, Dad, ?,?,?, Mrs Wellock Lived on the cul de sac alongside the railway bridge, Mr Slater. A couple of days before the event, the chickens were taken in sacks to a cellar of a house on the cul de sac off Hainworth Lane ov er looking the chapel. There a group of residents took the chickens, one by one from one of the sacks, wrung its neck and plucked it. There was feathers all over the cellar. As an 8 year old I was very upset at the spectacle. To this day, I do not understand why my partents took me along. Presumably as there was no one to look after me and my sister. I still remember the squarking of the chickens ... tramatised!!! Attachments:
