The death has been announced of Sir Marcus Worsley, MP for Keighley form 1955 to 1964, when he was famously defeated by our very own John Binns in 1964. Full obit in Daily Telegraph today , and probably other papers as well

I well remember during the 1964 election campaign ( On a very cold wet evening )I attending an election rally for Marcus Worsley. This was held at the Cavendish Cinema and the guest speaker was one Iain MacLeod, he was very entertaining, and one of the bigger guns of the Conservative party. His attendance however was in vain, Johnny Binns being duly elected. Co-incidentally Iain MacLeod was born in Skipton ,the son of a local doctor and a plaque is placed on the building to commemorate this.

Rather strangely the only time I saw Johnny Binns was coming off Cavendish street and heading towards the Ritz cinema. He was complete with mustache and wearing his red rosette and a big smile.
Must have been around the time he won the election.
John

Jonny Binns reminds me of the opening of the children's library extension in 1961, I think he was the Mayor who officially declared the extension open. I was involved in providing the public address system and the tape recording of the event. There were long horn speakers fitted to the outside of the library and smaller speakers inside, these were driven by a very powerful amplifier. We had set up the volume levels for a normal speaking voice, when Jonny Binns took the microphone from me and proceeded to bellow with such a loud voice, the amplifier nearly took off, I suppose it could be heard all over town. Panicking I rushed to the main volume control to reduce the racket.
