I saw the thread about the Spanish children being looked after, possibly during the Spanish Civil War and thought on 1914/1918 also.
My father's aunt lived in Haworth and once asked me if I remembered the children they took in during the war. I said that I was a baby during the war so it was unlikely. She went and found some letters written just after the 1918 signing of the peace and they turned out to be letters from the FIRST World War; she was quite old by then and we laughed about it.
Sorry to say that in a gas explosion her house caught fire and various papers were burned or thrown out including these ones. We did get a chance to read them when she produced them (written Flemish is as Dutch - though spoken with a different accent) and it was clear that my great grandmother and maiden aunt had taken in two girls for the duration. I wonder if there are record anywhere in our area?

The Keighley News correspondents reported almost weekly about the Belgian Refugees including the ones staying in the upper Worth Valley. The paper also ran a weekly column written in Flemish for the benefit of the Belgians in the area. As well as the arrivals the departures toward the end of the war were also reported.

Fantastic. Thanks for the info. What a pity we do not have the letters because we have friends in Belgium (Flanders) now, and it would have been good to check into the family.
