I was talking to a lady called Jean, who was brought up in the Bradford St area during the 50's, and she remarked that as kids they would often go play on the 'oller (which I guess was the Hollow) which was a piece of waste ground between 2 rows of terraces where bonfires were held, but Jean is curious if anyone else remembers the 'oller and what actually stood there originally?

A wash house perhaps? There's a square on Caroline Street right in the middle of Saltaire which is used for recreation now, but used to have a wash/bath house on it. Now every house in Saltaire has its own bathroom of course.

There were very few bathrooms in the '40s/'50s in that area even though the 'oller had been clear for a long time. If it was a wash house it was removed long before homes had their own bathrooms.

I grew up in the 60's on Beeches Terrace, just across Bradford Road and down a bit from Bradford Street. We had our 'oller at the back of our house next to t'allotments.
I should imagine any bit of spare ground where kids would play was called something similar.
