I was in Keighley immediately before Christmas with my grandchildren. My granddaughter asked about the Town Hall Square and the memorial. I told her that we used to call it Old Man's Park for obvious reasons and that as kids we could never get a seat on a park bench while we were waiting for a number 22 bus to take us home because of all the old people hogging them. Apologies if the Old Man Park query is old hat but I have tried to check the 'Search' for any interesting references to the Square but the search facility doesn't like characters less than four letters!!

You're right harrier, it was indeed a popular place with the oldies and we called it just that-- Old Man's park. Do you remember the gents toilet at the side by the back wall of the post office? Inside both exits were signs on the wall which said " Have you adjusted your clothing?" I have never seen those signs anywhere else in the world. Cheers.

The site of the Old Mens' Park was at one time the Corporation stone yard. When this was cleared away and it became the Town Hall Square, there was a small railed circle of trees/shrubs in the middle where the War Memorial now stands. The stone for the Memorial was quarried locally at Eastburn, and the bronze figures are the work of Henry Fehr of South Kensington, London. Some £6.000 was raised be public subscription for the Memorial, and it was unveiled in December 1924 - the same month that the last tram ran in Keighley.

I would like that sign in my bathroom for OH to look at before he leaves.
