Mills in Keighley

Sorry but I seem to have lost the thread about Keighley Mills. I was looking for a Kings Mill (no Andy, not the bread) and someone was going to check up for me if there is such a Mill. I am still interested to find out all about this Mill, and has anyone got a photo?

Hi Juliette
In trying to sort the board out, with lack of space in heading, I pulled the mills, millowners, and their houses under Industry, owners and houses, for want of a better title....will try and think of a more suitable one...................
So it is under there BUT not found anything as yet.....I still think it was the mill near West Lane.......but perhaps a later owner, as I know someone, somewhere in my distant past, sent me an e-mail about this people.....
As soon as I find anything, will let you know..............

That (partial) thread about Kings Mill is here in a thread called
History Meetings (Keighley)
I guess it kind of proves my point about starting a new thread with a relevant title rather than asking an unrelated question in an existing thread. I only knew where to look because I'd posted that picture of the Kingsmill loaf of bread in it for a joke and so I could remember where it was.

I would like to ask if anyone has heard of Peter Black's Mill. I think it was on the edge of Keighley, but I'm not sure. I was led to believe it caught fire in the 60's. I would appreciate any info on this please.

Peter Black's "mill" was a factory which during the war made webbing and other such textile requirements for the government and armed forces. It was established in what had previously been a mill opening onto Lawkholme Lane. After the war it became known as "Bagcraft" because it produced shopping (I think) bags and other bags. It was a major employer of young female labour. I remember the fire there but cannot recall the year. The factory extended to cover a larger area - absorbing all the businesses (one a moulding shop) between Lawkholme railway bridge and Alice Street. The major production line changed over to slippers. I had 2 periods of temporary employment there in the early '60s. The company had contracts to make slippers for many of the high street shoe shops, among them M and S.I am sure many contributors to this site will have information and memories to add.

For some years Peter Blacks was a thriving business but largely based on the fact they supplied Marks and Spencers with slippers, bags etc.
They eventually also bought two companies making soap, cosmetics and personal care products, also supplied largely to M&S contract .
I was a supplier of chemicals to the one in Trowbridge, Wiltshire a few years ago, and visited a few times. But Im not sure of that factories current status.

Is there any chance that someone can confirm that Peter Blacks did burn down in the 1960's, I think it might have been mid-60s but not sure.

The 60s were after I left but I can remember a fire at Bagcraft in the early 50s down Lawkeholme Lane. I remember recognising the fireman at the top of the extension ladder before we were cleared away to a safer spot to watch. That fire didn't burn the place down, it was contained. Cheers.

Is that anywhere near where the Peter Blacks place is, or should I say was?

I am not sure this is the factory/mill that I mean then because I was told by someone who wasn't born until 1959 that the fire they saw was when she was quite young, so presumably that would be mid 60s?
