When the Mechanics Institute was built on North Street, stained glass windows were fitted to the stairwell on the rear elevation overlooking Lord Street. These were, fortunately, undamaged during the fire and still remain in situ. They depict different coats of arms, with references to Prince Smith and other dignitaries.
Does anyone have any information or knowledge about these windows - who designed them, manufactured them and importantly if they may have been bequeathed to either the original Institute, Keighley Council/Bradford Council or other body.
Any other general information would also be appreciated.

Hi, Don't know about the windows, and wish I did. Must confess I didn't know about them. Must go and have a look. But the Prince-SMITH connection might come into it somewhere. Prince-SMITH II (born 03 September 1840, died 22 October 1922), son of Prince SMITH I and Martha EDMONDSON was the one who gave the clock in memory of his father. The clock was set in motion 30 June 1892.
The foundation stone of the Mechanics Institute, designed by Lockwood & Mawson of Bradford, was laid on 12 December 1868 by Sir Isaac HOLDEN, and opened 30 September 1870 by the Duke of Devonshire.
Allan Smith.

Keighley Boy
Thank you for your information.
I will look further into the Lockwood & Mawson link and see if I can find anything from them as prominent Architects/Designers of their era.

Well there are pictures of two of the windows , taken fairly recently. Please look at the excellent kbgs.com website, and then go to the photos section. Then go to the 'Inside KBGS' section and there are three pages (Click at bottom of page 1 to get to 2 and 3). There are pics of two of the windows. There might be some info on the forum threads also in this website, but I havent time to trawl through right now. Two other sections of photos might be of interest , 'The Fire' , and also 'Campus'

Thanks for your information and link to the Grammar School site. The photos are excellent - I'll look through the site and see if I can find any other references.
Much appreciated.

I was of the impression that the Mechanics Institute was demolished some years ago. Didnt it stand across from the War Memorial on the corner of North Street and Cavendish Road?

Half of it was demolished after the fire, the back end including the stairwell where the stained glass windows remain to this day. This section of the building was used by the college with the new building attached to the frontage on Cavendish Street and the new building, alongside which is where the church was. These both face the Town hall square (old man's square) and war memorial.

Yes, it stood exactly where you say, on the corner of Cavendish Street and North Street. It burnt down on the night of 03Mar1962.

I hope someone else can verify this, because I'm uncertain of its integrity, but I heard that the bells were stolen from the yard of the Corporation Cleansing Department in Lawkholme Lane, where they had been taken following the fire.
