Keighley Local History Day

Hi Everyone,

Many of you missed us at Keighley Show last Saturday, BUT I am hoping that some of will support me this Saturday 11 September. I have arranged a Keighley History Day for us all to enjoy. We have so much of interest for you all.

It would be good if anyone who has any ephemera on Keighley - Keighley School - Industry etc etc

Charlie Bhowmick - has kindly said he will open the event for us - if you have never met Charlie you are in for a treat

The doors open at 10.00 and hopefully if there is enough interest it will go on until 4.00 - please come and support us. There will be refreshments available and the Local Studies Library staff will be on hand to help us in any way they can.

We have many of our own members exhibiting for us.

I've just been in to sort out the schools boxes and the displays that are already up look vry good indeed. Should be a good day!

Yes, I'm looking forward to it. Should be a great day. The library staff have been very helpful indeed.
I have been working on my three small displays for ages but I've just seen what Jan has done for KDLHS and am staggered at the amount of work that she has put in.

If this event is a success (and I have no doubt it will be) then Jan is the person who must take the credit for arranging it all. Yes, I know many others have helped as well but we all know who has been the prime mover in all of this.

Well, I didn't stop, all day. Had two cups of tea and two biscuits and I had a steady stream of visitors to my displays throughout the day. Loads of new information and pictures from people who were delighted to hear about the project. And a load more research work to do, but this time virtually all the pictures have names written on them. A whole set of about twenty pictures of Yorkshire Hussars, all with names.

Well, I went to help as and where I could, can not say I helped much but did manage to direct some of the human traffic into the right direction.
Saw Mr and Mrs Whalley twitch when I said “do you remember me” (old head master)
I had two cups of coffee, a biscuit and one insult from Malcolm who thought I would be younger (gunna get him at play time), put the history education system to rights, designed a statue for Eddy for when he dies so he can replace Rombolds, sorted Alan’s memory out and gave him a stern talking to, and then lost interest when I discovered that the Welsh came to Yorkshire in 59 AD, So over all a very productive day for me.

The displays were well worth a view, people had put a lot of effort in and it showed. My friend was chuffed as a chuffed thing over the Men of Worth and that Andy was interested in some stuff she had. The Asian lady modelling the traditional wedding dress was a little late turning up, but as it is their Eid I guess she had other commitments, but her outfit was well worth a viewing.

The day just emphasised just how much we have to learn about our town and it’s history. It was nice to see a stand there from the Asian community and the enthusiasm that they have was refreshing and my bet is at the next one they will have a display that will be hard to match.

Loved the models that the children had made, but there was one thing missing out of the Brown Cow, where was a model of Eddie?
Come on schools do your homework ;-)

The Library's counter on the door estimates that 480 people attended (but that doesn't count the people who used the lift or those who didn't walk directly under the 'counter' so probably a few more than this).

Certainly steady all day with a few pretty hectic spells.

Andy Wade - did you actually get a break at all during the day??? Seemed to be a queue at your stand every time I looked over or tried to catch a word with you!

Vale - sorry, no idea whats happened to the model of Eddie. The only bits that I was given that weren't out on display were the other displays of pupil work as there wasn't enough space to accomodate them all.

I left a feedback book on the schools stand. Lots of positive comments about the event in general and the work done by the schools. Here's what people wrote:

A thouroghly fascinating subject for the students to participate in. Excellent level of work achieved - and you can see the enjoyment.

This is the first time I have seen an exhibition produced and presented connected with Keighley people including school children. The work that has gone into this is amazingand you can see this wonderful display with colour, quality materials and workmanship put in by the different organisations. I do admire the school childrens work which is very impressive. Well done Keighley History Society. Keep up the god work. Charlie Bhoemick.

An excellent event bringing together the variety of local groups depicting the history of Keighley and its people. Hope this will act as a catalyst for future events of this type. Nick, Keighley Ukranian Society.

A fine exhibition raising many memories and putting faces to well known names. The schools exhibits were excellent and another year maybe each school could be asked to provide a pictorial history - school photographs are always a winner. Bob Clarke.

Many of the displays will remain in the Library until the middle of next week so theres a chance to see them if you were unable to attend.

Thanks for organising the event Jan, it was really enjoyable.

A great day, that! But Jan, amongst all the hard work that surely must have gone into it, I wish you'd thought to give the venue. After finding Victoria Hall locked and barred, I must have spent ten minutes driving round the park trying to get out into Hard Ings Lane, which as I found out, is not allowed. We aliens from Bradford need a bit more guidance!!

Most enjoyable. Went to the town hall first and looked at the mayors mace. Then went upstairs and listend to Mr Dewhurst talking about the history of the mayors of Keighley.
This is the first time i've heard Ian give a talk. A very good speaker.
Then i went to the libary . Very good display on view. The old pictures of Keighley brought it all back to me. I was surprised to see a photo of inside Prince Smith & Stells. My grand father worked there. Well done to Jan & her helpers for putting all together.
