Does anyone know what happened to the plaque which was unveiled when the track at Marley Stadium was first opened? Is it retained in the changing rooms at the present Marley Playing Fields? Was it resited? From what I remember, it detailed that monies for the construction of the track came from collections at Billy Butlins Holiday Camp at Filey. If my memory serves me correctly ..... why was a collection made there, and why for a running track ... and why Keighley which was almost devoid of any athletic activity. Even in the late 50s / early sixties when I worked at the track for four months each year for four or five years, our weekly takings for anyone using the track was very small!! VERY small.

As far as I know this would have been part and parcel of the George V playing fields, for which there is a reg. charity. There seem to have been a number of George V playing fields opened as a memorial to George V, so perhaps it was a nationwide thing and thats why butlins supported it?
