When and why did the tannery at Hermit Hole, Ingrow, close down? How long had it been there? Someone in the same class as me at junior school used to live next to the tannary, in a small cul de sac, off Halifax road but parallel to it. How on earth his parents put up with the stink, I shall never know. The dad worked for the gas board as a meter reader.

No sure when it closed. However the hides were brought to it at one time from the Flaypit, where they had been flayed (wet and then beaten) in a stream in the field diagonally across traffic lights from the Flappit pub (Flappit being a corruption of Flaypit)

Interesting to know how the pub got it's name. I always thought it was some sort of bird name from old.

There used to be a small cul-de-sac behind Halifax Road- its name was 'Paradise' - I dont know if this was an official name or had been given by the people who lived there. In my young days I had a friend who lived on 'Paradise' - they were small mill houses. Maybe the same cul-de-sac you are talking about.

Does anyone have any further information about the activities that went on there, or can point me in the right direction. Thanks Jar Bancroft Attachments:

What a great article Jar. Well done. Is it a coincidence that my old friend John Bancroft still lives in the family farm almost opposite Providence cottages? I was up there in April on my last/recent visit to Cross Roads.Cheers.
